Preschool Story Time
Apr 30th, 2009 by Teresa
Preschool Story Time meets Thursday mornings at 10:00. The activities are aimed at 3-5 year-olds. We have three sessions, spring, summer and fall. No registration required.
Story Time features books, fingerplays, songs and crafts. It usually lasts about 30 minutes. The crafts may require some help from an adult, but are appropriate for young children. The craft is related to the theme of the books that were shared, so gives the child a take home reminder of story time.
We incorporate singing into the program because, first, it is fun! Second, it is a great aid in helping children to hear the sounds of language. The rhythms and rhyming help them to distinguish sounds of words, which will help when they are learning to read.
A part of our Preschool Story Time is “The Letter of the Day.” Each week a letter is featured that ties in with the theme of the story time. We have added a booklet to reinforce what we share at storytime. The booklets have letter and images we see at story time. This simple booklet encourages letter knowledge, vocabulary, awareness of print, is fun to look at, and provides an opportunity to talk about story time and what happened there. These are all included in the 6 important pre-reading skills that children need to know before they learn to read – around the age of 6. These booklets are handed out at storytime or you can download a PDF file to print out at home. Check back for the link.
This is a great opportunity for that first venture out into a social situation. It is also great for the parents/grandparents to have a chance to meet and visit with other parents of small children.
Supervising adults are requested to accompany their children and remove them from the story time area if they become disinterested or disruptive. Children under the age of seven must be accompanied by an adult while at the library.
